The Gift of Reminiscing
by Dionna Sanchez
Emphasis On Moms
I have had the opportunity to go through some old scrapbooks, photo albums, and journals lately. It has been a wonderful delight to realize that a whole hour has gone by as I have immersed myself in memories of the past. I don't get the chance to do that very often, but have really felt blessed as I have recalled so many hidden treasures in my heart of those I love.
I don't think that we can value the effect another life has on us quite enough. As I went back through the years (and the memories) I was given the gift of remembering dear old friends, family acquaintances, and special people who not only added to my life; but added to my soul. These people impacted me by their gifts of love into my life and through the words they used to express how they felt about me. As I look back now, those words were kind then, but the impact truly extends to who I am today as I reread the sentiments that they sent my way.
I used to think that I was keeping too much and I purged some of my things at one point. Oh how I wish I hadn't!! The notes and memories are lost forever now.
I do think it is important to be organized and keep only the things you truly value. But when it comes to photographs, notes and cards, and hand-made pictures etc - I don't think you can ever have enough.
We get so caught up in "today" that sometimes we bury our "yesterdays." Failing to recall what formed and shaped us or who impacted our lives. As a mom, it is important to take the time to go back and remember ...because then we can also remind ourselves of the individual we were; and are today. Then we can use that inner sense of "self" to work for us as we shape our own children's hearts and lives. We won't feel like we are losing our individuality in the role of being a mom and wife.
Take the time to dig in your attic, your hope chest, the closet, or drawers -- wherever you keep those faded and worn mementos. Immerse yourself - just for a time- in the memories of your life. You will feel the thoughts and reflections permeate your heart. It will be time well spent.
